Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classes consist of 4 and 5 year old who are beginning their academic experience. The children get more motivated as they start recognizing items with words, and colorful labels and images help us help them to acquire language arts skills.
We are a group of 4 Pre K classes, where 2 are Spanish and English and 2 General Education.
We are located in the South East area of Dallas, Texas. We service children that are in a low socio-economic range. Our classes consist of 97% of low income children, and we provide a full day of instruction. We, as teachers, are always working to get our students ready for their next academic level. Most students have never been to school or head start.
My Project
My students need a printer to make vibrant color labels to support learning academic vocabulary, and also to read and write. We are providing the basis for our students in all subjects: Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies, as well as providing emotional support, and working on their motor skills. Since our students are in the beginning stages of learning Language Arts, they need plenty of visual stimulating labels and illustrations to scaffold their learning. We have a 36 weeks curriculum where about every 4 to 5 weeks we change the classroom theme. We need to print new vocabulary pictures, and samples for them to have a better understanding of the new academic vocabulary. We know and are extremely confident that our students have the capacity of learn on different levels, and we provide differentiated instruction to guide our students into their next academic level.
By providing colorful illustrations to our students, they will have a better understanding of what a new word for them means.
As the students have the opportunity to view a color label with the word, he or she starts understanding that spoken words can be written down, and read. Also, that every word consists of letters and phonemes. When the start learning the alphabet, their faces light up when they see a letter on a label that they recognize.
