My Students
I work at a school where there are only kindergarten and transitional kindergarten classes. Since we are the only grades on campus, we are able to do many different things to make learning fun and engaging for our students. Meeting our students’ diverse needs at this early age is our number one goal. Half of the school is part of a dual language program so the students spend 50% of their time learning in English and 50% of their time learning Spanish.
The students in my class are full of energy to learn and demonstrate what they know.
They are always able to surprise each other and me with what they learn and can share with each other. We are the first building block in their education in this community. When the students leave, they not only leave with the traditional academic skills but also friendships and life skills to carry them as they grow.
My Project
When the students are learning a new concept they struggle without real life examples. With these alphabet tubs I will be able to show students actual things that start with each letter. This gives them concrete connections to the letters.
While a picture is nice, it does not compare to the students being able to hold an object in their hands.
Making connections is the biggest thing and finding ways to do that is a big part of my job. While the students might not able to hold objects yet, with distance learning they will still get a better idea of objects that I can show them through online communication. The hope is that these tubs will serve many students through the years giving the time to grab on to objects to connect to the letters to learn even more as they go.
