My Students

My suburban school is part of a large school district that is in a consistent state of growth. This growth accounts for our ever-changing population and constant campus growth. We have a diversified campus, serving students from a variety of economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds. Our student population has faced real-life challenges this year as they have made decisions regarding the learning environment and begun to relearn the process of doing school. Our students come in every library day asking for graphic novels. While we have these books, we can not keep them on the shelves! The supply is not enough for the demand. These kids are hungry to read!!

My Project

Graphic novels are for all our readers and need to be legitimized by being readily available in school libraries. Reluctant readers are more likely to pick up a book with more pictures than words. Graphic novels engage the reluctant reader, while still exposing them to the joy of reading. Graphic novels are also an engaging format for higher-level readers who are looking for fun, interesting, and enjoyable texts for a quick read.

Graphic novels give our struggling readers context clues and assistance to read age-appropriate stories AND give our high-level readers a quality story that they can read in one or two sittings.

Graphic novels still develop and increase vocabulary, comprehension, inferencing, and sequencing skills. Without a doubt, these novels help to create a well-rounded and diversified library.
