My thumb presses the wireless doorbell, signaling to my students it is time to begin the assigned task. All at once they stand up and disperse to all corners of the classroom. Gathering scratch paper, pencils and coloring tools, possibly technology, and find a place to work.
Once settled, they independently dive into the task.
Conversation ensues as students hold each other accountable not only for the answers but for the "how" and "why" that let them let them there.
Change is underway as I have been working toward innovating my classroom. All student desk contents have found homes in one of the 30 cubbies I was lucky to get from a previous Donors Choose project. This freed us up from using desks all together as I have been slowly replacing them with more flexible seating.
Our eyes are on a new prize, portable lap desks.
We would like 4 portable lap desks. The portable lap desks will allow students to grab and go where they want to work. They can choose to sit against the wall, a corner, or out in the center of class. They can even take them outside to work in our school garden.
