Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Ninety-eight percent of my students live below the poverty line. Their families all work hard to provide for them, but many still struggle to cover basic needs such as housing, food, and clothing. Students frequently come to school hungry and tired due to limited resources in the home. They may lack breakfast or a bed to sleep on. Many basic school supplies such as folders or gym shoes are not in the budget for our families.
It's hard to focus on learning when your emotional and physical needs are not always met.
Many students feel hopeless about their ability to succeed in school. My students are eager to learn but frequently doubt their abilities. Many of these kids are learning English as a second or even as a third language. Please consider supporting these great kids to reach their full potential and believe in themselves.
My Project
Our school does NOT have a school library! The only books we have in my room are the ones I have purchased or previously received as a donation. I work with the students who are just learning English and who are struggling with the language. Many of these students feel like they are so behind, they will never become good readers.
We are requesting graphic novels that will grab the attention of struggling, discouraged readers.
Our titles include Brave, Big Nate, New Kid, Fantastic Four and more. Several of the requests in this order are from students who have sat in frustration during reading class because they don't understand many of the book choices in the room or they can't find one that looks interesting to them. I have requested many books my students have asked for by name, like Marvel Super Hero graphic novels, in hopes of helping my students develop a love for reading.
