After teaching first and second graders for thirty years, I was able to transition to a reading interventionist position and focus on one of my favorite things - helping students learn to love reading. This position has allowed me to work with students from kindergarten to fifth grade in small groups. This intervention is much-needed at all levels in our large, rural Title I school.
I love helping others to succeed.
This year, I have been given a unique opportunity to not only work directly with students providing reading interventions but also to work part-time helping our reading specialist/curriculum coach work with our teachers to help them build their teacher toolboxes. It has been great helping our teachers help our students.
My Project
Students love to work in small groups in various places around the classroom. While most of our reading instruction is done at our kidney-shaped table, there are times when sitting on the floor makes more sense and is more engaging. When I transitioned to the reading interventionist position, I left behind many of my materials for the new teacher. I now find myself needing a new rug for my students to be able to sit comfortably on while we work on various tasks. Word work spread out around the floor can be much more engaging than when stuck at the table.
