My sixth grade ELA and Social Studies class is full of heart, discovery, learning, growing, and loving. I have students from many different backgrounds, most of whom are receiving free or reduced-price lunch because of their financial situations.
A majority of my students do not read on grade level, but this does not make them inferior.
They thrive when given the opportunity to read texts that make sense to them, and they give all of their effort to better themselves. I am hoping to enrich their lives and improve their learning one day at a time! I would not be in this profession if I didn't love and care for each face that I see every morning. Let's ensure that every child's future is bright!

My Project
My students need a large and comfortable rug for the classroom. A lot of the teaching that I do takes place on the rug; a space for everyone to sit comfortably and listen to a book. 6th graders are big! The rug I currently have does not even come close to fitting all of them on it and it is very thin and uncomfortable!
It is important for my students to have spaces where they can sit comfortably without sitting at their desks.
A large comfy rug would be awesome in the classroom! The rug area is also used as a space for students to sit during independent reading time. The second half of my project is a collection of culturally diverse books. I think it is super important for my students to read books about different cultures, places, ethnicities, etc. especially because they all come from such different places.
My hope is to incorporate a "Read Without Walls" approach to picking books, which would ask my students to pick up and read a book where the main character does not look or live like them.
