I work with students who are extremely high needs in every way. They are resilient students who struggle with emotional and educational needs. They often do not have their very basic needs met. As a school social worker, my responsibility is to make sure our students are able to sit in class with dry, clean uniform clothes. Many students are embarrassed and feel alienated in their classrooms as they arrive to school wearing non-uniform or a dirty uniform. Social workers are charged with ensuring that all barriers standing in the way of the students receiving their education are removed. A female student may struggle with focusing in class if her skirt is too small. A young boy may appear combative if his shirt is dirty and has been teased for this. With this project, I am hopeful that providing students with clean, new uniforms will instill confidence and success on multiple levels,
Students enter my office on a daily basis in unclean, ill-fitting clothing. Through DonorsChoose, we were able to choose dress code compliant clothing which will help our students feel a part of their school community. Having pants which fit may positively impact a student's concentration and focus in the classroom. Receiving a new shirt, without stains and holes can boost a student's self confidence. When children have a school uniform on, they spend more time in the classroom and less time feeling isolated. These uniforms are critical to their success socially, academically and removes stigma. It means the world to them! Thank you!
