My school has a 70+% poverty rate. We are a rural community. Many of our students live in small bubbles, meaning they can't imagine life beyond the few surrounding towns. Our students/community lack the understanding of the value of education and where it can take them. Attendance is poor and many students show no interest in their education.
Sweet, country kids who need some creativity and spark to get them excited about education.
This is how I would generally describe our population. They often lack confidence and seem unwilling to step out and try. They need enthusiasm and interest to pull them in and get them hooked on education.
My Project
In order to create an inviting space where teens not only want to be but are excited to be, I want to provide alternative seating to fit our Gotham City Internet Cafe classroom. I have purchased 2 sets of this seating with tables and the students love it! These seats allow them to swivel while still participating in class. I have added a life size Batman as well as some trendy decor on the walls. Students I don't even teach are coming by to see and want to come in and be part of our "internet cafe." I wish to get rid of the desks and create a teen-friendly environment. It's all about the kids!
