My Students

"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body." - John Addison. Many of our students are struggling readers. Our library needs to be constantly adding high interest/low readability books to the collection to meet the needs of students. These sports books-themed will help to fill this need

Our school's enrollment this year is around 375 students, Kindergarten - 6th grade.

Of these 375 students, 75%+ qualify for free and reduced lunch. Approximately 30% of our student population are English Language Learners, with the predominant language being Spanish. While we do have a small population of children who are advanced readers, the majority of our students struggle with reading for a variety of reasons. Despite the challenges we face as educators at our school, the staff is a caring and committed group of professionals. Staff turnover is relatively low because of the positive working environment. Everyone who works here wants to be here, working diligently to make a real difference in the lives of children.

My Project

A primary goal of school libraries is to provide books that students want to read for enjoyment. Due to budget limitations, and because our school has a very wide range of readers (from a small percentage of advanced readers to a large percentage of struggling readers), it is difficult to build a library collection to meet the needs of our divers group of readers. Having a school library collection that meets the needs of patrons is of utmost importance in schools like ours, where many students do not have opportunities to visit the local public library. For many of our students our school library is THE go-to place for great books to read just for fun; and at the same time they will increasing their skills and strategies as readers.

Time and time again research has shown that the more children read and are read to, the faster their reading skills and strategies will grow.

The books included in this project are considered high/low books...Books that are high interest/low readability. These kinds of books appeal to our upper grade students, even though the reading levels are low. High/Low books provide older kids with books that they don't have to feel embarrassed about checking out and reading.
