Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We like big binders and we cannot lie. No AVID student can deny, that when a kid walks in and puts a binder in your face, it better have enough space to get grades!
When you've got 7 classes in a day, you need a big binder to stay organized!
My students are in an 8th grade AVID Elective class in a California public middle school.
They are the students "in the middle" who have the potential for increased academic and personal success with the skills and strategies that AVID provides. These 30 young men and young women are a hard-working bunch who challenge themselves to take advanced classes, encourage their classmates to make it through tough times, and share in celebrations of success. They appreciate the value of a BIG binder and inspire me every day. For the only-children, this class gives them brothers and sisters. For the kids from single-parent families, they've got more parent-like guidance and support. For kids with blended and extended families, we provide a space for them to shine. It's an AVID family for sure.
My Project
Quality, heavy-duty binders can be expensive. My students try to stalk the "back-to-school" sales for adequate binders, but with their course loads, those binders fill up quick and are pushed to the limit. Not every student can afford a new binder mid-year, and these kids get resourceful with duct tape and careful handling. A new 2-inch binder will be a treasured gift yet a valued tool for success.
The organized binder is the lifeline for an AVID student.
This is the student who tentatively enrolls in an advanced course, but breathes easier with an arsenal of study skills and strategies learned in AVID class. They work toward achieving their goals of attending a 4-year college, graduating with a degree, and using their skills and knowledge in a career. The binder is the foundation of organization, goal-setting, self-discipline, and self-confidence. Give them a binder, help them succeed!
