My students need a Cricut Explore Air 2 machine to add relevant artistic elements to science investigations and social studies discovery units with discipline-based art education (DBAE).

My 3rd grade students are striving readers and mathematicians who are significantly below grade-level and have many special and individual needs. They are hard-working and most lack access to technology at home. When they come to school, they come to a classroom with old, but functional computers. Our urban school serves a diverse, transient population with most qualifying for free/reduced lunch. Our school lacks the necessary current technology to prepare our students for meeting the rigors of Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Assessments (PARCC).
"The digital divide is alive and well, and providing access to technology alone does not bridge the digital divide.
[Teachers] can support the development of information capital in at-risk communities by intentionally and appropriately using new media in programming for young children." – Fred Rogers Institute “Digital Media Mentors” (April 14, 2014)
My students work around multiple issues on a daily basis while using the decade-old computers at our technology center. I want my students to have access to current technology to complete some interactive classroom projects from math fluency practice to publishing reading, math and science projects.
The Cricut Air 2 will provide students the ability to add relevant artistic elements to science investigations and social studies discovery units. With teacher assistance, the students will design elements to add unique flair and personality to class notebooks and individual projects in science and social studies.
Discipline-based art education (DBAE) involves inquiry, dialogue, reflection, and response around a particular theme (Noddings, Challenge to Care in Schools, 2005).
The Cricut Air 2 will provide opportunities for students to design and create unique relevant art elements to personalize student projects. Furthermore, the teacher can use the Cricut Air 2 to design and create t-shirts, classroom design elements for displays and t-shirts relevant to unit/topic of study in science and social studies.
