Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Did you ever wish you had ONE MINUTE during the school day to talk to your school counselor and express your feelings about something effecting your life? Many of my students struggle with social and family issues that make it difficult for them to stay focused on their academic school work.
As urban, inner city children in grades one through eight, they often face hurdles on their path to an education.
These hurdles may include language barriers, single parent households, living in foster homes, gang violence, drugs and poverty. Often times, my students lack positive coping methods to overcome their struggles. I want to help my students learn good coping methods to overcome the struggles they face through the use of minute meetings.
My Project
With a caseload of over 1,100 students, every student does not get to meet with the school counselor throughout the school year. HOWEVER, this year, I want to change that with the use of minute meetings. Minute meetings are short, but meaningful meetings that allow the school counselor to 'check in' with all of the students on their caseload. Often times, I only get to see students on an individual basis who ask to see me or who are referred by a teacher or parent. However, ALL students could and SHOULD benefit from checking in with their school counselor without having to ask. Having an iPad available during these meetings is important because kids love technology! My students will love being able to answer the questions directly on the iPad using google docs. In addition, I will be able to use the data from these meetings to follow up with students, create classroom lessons and form counseling groups.
As a school counselor, my goal is to make meaningful connections with all of my students!
Studies show that kids who have an adult they can connect to are more resilient and more prepared to cope with the struggles they face. As a counselor in an urban inner city school district where students are faced with difficult obstacles on a daily basis, I know having these minute meeting equipped with an iPad will help me to reach ALL of my students and open the door for a meaningful adult connection!
