Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with students of various backgrounds and skill levels. These are energetic student-athletes who are seeking outlets and activities that match their energy and interest levels. Working in a low-income school district, it is often difficult to find resources that attract our students to new athletic opportunities.
I want to do everything in my power to allow my student-athletes to have the materials that they need so that they are able to pursue as many new athletic opportunities available to them.
Although many of my students may have had a lack of resources and equipment in the past, I would like them to be exposed to as many new athletic opportunities, as possible.
My Project
Soccer, or football, as its more popularly known worldwide, does not get as much attention in the United States as some other sports. It is amazing that our country is so focused on becoming the leader or innovator in so many other venues but not in one of the most popular team sports in the world.
These ideas that stress other sports in this country, also affect youth players in the community in which I coach soccer.
Soccer has been overshadowed in this community by these other sports. This is unfortunate, as it decreases the amount of new opportunities for our youth to succeed both athletically and academically. If players are allowed to develop successfully in these youth programs, they could continue into their high school and college years. Along with their continued success, they would also be exposed to more opportunities when it comes to college scholarships. For my student-athletes, a college education would open several new doors and would truly be invaluable to their future.
As it is currently hard enough to emphasize a sport that has been overshadowed, it is even more difficult when we do not have the proper, basic equipment. The current status of our team uniforms consists of missing or mismatched pieces.
Providing my student-athletes with proper uniforms could help to inspire a new generation in my community to follow a dream that they had been previously unaware. They could potentially open a door that could lead to numerous athletic and academic opportunities.
