This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are a rambunctious group of learners with varying disabilities. Despite their disabilities, my students work hard to stay on track and achieve their goals right along side their general education peers. They love to learn and explore. They learn best when their different learning styles are included in the lesson.
Students in my class come from varying backgrounds and include ELLs, students with physical disabilities, students with developmental disabilities and students with specific learning disabilities.
What they all have in common is that they all attend a title one school where 70% of the school population is on free or reduced lunch. Most of them come from families who struggle economically and are unable to provide their basic school needs, let alone the items that they need to help them focus and stay on track with their non-disabled peers.
All of my students are near and dear to my heart. They give everyone that they meet an opportunity to learn about their world and the way that they see it. These students are deserving of so much more than the public education system provides for them.
My Project
My students have a lot stacked against them but are still expected to show growth in the general education curriculum right along side their non-disabled peers. In order to to meet their goals, they are in need of various tools to help them function and focus. They are ready and willing learners who want to do well but just need a little extra motivation and assistance with attending to tasks and completing their assignments.
The items on this list will help my students with ADD/ADHD focus, my students with autism with their sensory needs, and my students with physical and learning disabilities do their best work.
The fidget pencils are always a hit. The students love that they can do their work and fidget while not distracting their peers. Some of my students with autism spectrum disorder have varying sensory needs that could hinder their abilities to stay in an inclusion classroom (their least restrictive environment) without those needs being met. The chew jewelry, sensory toys, and flexible seating can really help make the classroom environment more comfortable for them so that they can show the world how they can achieve greatness.
These materials will lead to a more accepting, inclusive, and successful classroom and school year.
