Our small rural farming community is filled with the beauty of nature and family. A traffic jam consists of two trucks behind a tractor, and everyone is okay with the slowed pace. Kids play outside with their dogs in the mud. As a result of the slow pace and small population, the school is truly the heart of our community. The parent, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins all work together to support their students' education.
Lots of things in the world are rapidly changing and as their teacher, I want to support them and increase their opportunities to learn and grow.
Our community is a wonderful place to grow up, but resources are scarce. This means the teachers and staff work extra hard to make sure our students get the supplies they need to compete with larger communities.
My Project
In order to teach grammar in an authentic way our district uses mentor sentences. Basically, we select an engaging story that can be used to show the children great writing. From within that story we select a sentence that uses the grammar skill we wish to teach. We then refer to that story and sentence through out the week as we master that skill.
Teaching grammar through reading and writing allows the students to relate an isolated skill in a useful setting making it more practical to apply.
The books I'm asking for will allow the students the opportunity to dig into the well written texts to see how they can use grammar skills to improve communication while writing and speaking. I'm asking for theses books to provide a more engaging opportunity for my students.
