This proposal will provide funding to buy the video “Good-Bye Mr. Chips,” the original movie from 1939 that tells about the life of Mr. Chipping, a Latin teacher at a very stiff and proper English boarding school who eventually wins over the minds and hearts of his students. This video is of the original Mr. Chips (1939 with Robert Donat) and tells the story almost in playwright form without all the color and special effects of films today. It is a story told only as the films of this era (Gone with the Wind, Stagecoach, etc.) could tell in black and white and with the feel of being on stage. This video will be put into our media center here at South East Middle School for 6th through 8th graders to view as part of language arts classes. Unlike the films of today, this film will touch the heart of every child in a way that allows them to see wonderful film-making and wonderful character roles, while demonstrating that even in the face of great tragedy and pain, there is meaning in life and a reason to go on. (Mr. Chips marries, loses his young wife and child, yet comes back to teach year after year watching hundreds of boys grow up, while never able to see his own grow up). My goal with this video is to show students that the classics (be it film or books) are something they can watch, read, and enjoy.
