Help me give my students flexible seating options, white board paint, adhesive whiteboard, and white board markers to transform our classroom into a student-centered learning space.
I currently have forty-five unique fourth graders who are eager to learn every day in my math and science classes. My classroom is fully immersed in STEM learning and we do our best to ensure all students have access to various technologies and STEM materials that are not available to them anywhere else. While they are using these materials every day, they are moving throughout the classroom as part of our student-centered environment.
My fourth graders love to learn about anything, especially when it involves coding, making, and building!
They love to be actively engaged and it shows when they are using materials they love. This inquisitive group of kids continues to amaze me each and every day! They are native digital learners but do not have the equipment available in school to show off their skills.
My Project
I have been slowly transforming my room from an antiquated classroom that looked just like 1980 to a unique learning space that 4th graders want to be a part of everyday. Recently, we have ditched the desks and replaced them with tables. We eliminated most chairs and replaced them with various seating options chosen by the students. Students are the center of our learning spaces and their thoughts and ideas matter. They have been asking for even more choices when it comes to the seats they pick. They love to be on the floor when working and would be super comfortable using the pod seats or portable lap desk. The lap desk also gives them the additional option of find a private place to work when needed.
Students also wanted a seating option that allowed them to move and get their wiggles out while learning.
I would love to give them the option of the donut seats for this exact need. They are very similar to the very popular yoga balls we currently have, but are much more stable.
Another transformation we have made in our classroom, is to give the students more space to work collaboratively. The whiteboard adhesive will create white spaces over our chalkboards and walls where students can write and collaborate every day. The Rust-Oleum clear whiteboard paint will create even more space to write, by turning their tables into large workspaces to draw, write, and take notes with their dry erase expo markers. All of these materials will not only transform what our learning space looks like, but more importantly will transform the way students are learning in the space.
