Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a 2nd grade bilingual classroom. The majority of my students only have access to literature while at school. For those who do have books at home, they are all in English which doesn't allow them access to equal growth in both languages. 2nd grade is an incredibly inquisitive age. My students have a passion for reading, they love to come early and stay in at recess so that they can practice as much as possible. Regretfully they only enjoy reading in their spare time and haven't extended this passion into our structured class time when we use our text books.
I want to make reading instruction and practice during class enjoyable while at the same time touching on as many standards as possible and making the instruction meaningful. With these practice books, books-on-tape, and reader's theater plays the students will be able to have fun while learning a skill that will carry them through their lives. This week I found a play on line which we incorporated into a reading unit on family and my students came alive like never before. They acted and read in front of the whole class with courage and pride. It was so refreshing to watch them enjoy passages which could challenge and improve their reading level. We have only a few resources like these and they provide a more meaningful opportunity for the kids to internalize new vocabulary and information.
There are too many children who graduate from high school illiterate and I don't want that fate for my students. My students read at a very low level and this makes reading time very hard for them because the text book, although necessary, isn't accessible to them and therefore not very enjoyable. These supplies would supplement and liven up our reading time. Being able to read will make everything we do in class more accessible; math, science, writing, and social studies. This grant not only provides my students with a stronger foundation in reading but also a well rounded education as you are also increasing their comprehension of all other subjects. Thank you for providing this access to both their class work and the future to my students. They deserve the resources and education necessary to continue on to higher education.
