My Students
I teach an amazing group of upper grade students in a Special Education Class (SDC). They each have individual needs as well as different learning styles and preferences, but they all share a love of learning exciting things, and being engaged in learning. My students enjoy reading and writing about how and why things occur in nature. Furthermore, they enjoy being able to explain to others about the things they have learned each day. This bunch of kiddos have a math strength, and desire to gain that same strength in reading, and writing.
My Project
When students come to school each day they are often in need of social emotional nurturing. Some students rushed to get to school on time and feel flustered. Other students left households that are in disarray. Some students feel sad, angry, disappointed, nervous, anxious or scared. If they are unable to express these feelings, or aren’t given proper tools in development to process these feelings, they may have trouble the entire school day encoding learning. The feelings journals will be utilized as a morning activity to help my students learn how to process and express their feelings in a healthy way. We don’t always feel happy, but when we are feeling otherwise, it’s okay. The sensory molding sand will also allow students to creatively engage in a calming activity. The morning numbers calendar although more academic, will be used to help me direct a community conversation that hopefully will include the opportunity for students to volunteer to speak about their morning.
