My students are interesting individuals. They come from all walks of life with a variety of experiences. When they come together as a class, they bring their own unique perspectives and outlooks. Sharing who we are as human beings makes all our lives better.
We believe in building a positive relationship with each of our students.
One way we do this is to meet in small groups each day to work with students who need help with their reading skills. In grades four and five, our students practice their reading fluency independently and then meet with a teacher to chart their progress. Our goal is to meet the needs of all our students.
At all grade levels, we work hard to engage our students in their learning! We celebrate learning at each student's pace, and focus on individual growth while creating a community of caring learners.
My Project
Each year we have between 80-90 students participate in our Read Naturally Program. These are our students who are not able to read at the grade level common core standards. Sometimes it is due to a specific learning disability, or limited exposure to pre-reading skills, but whatever the cause, they are all struggling readers. Of course, they may have different needs, and may need different levels of intervention, but Read Naturally helps by meeting them at their level.
These CD Players (and batteries) enable will students to hear the vocabulary words read to them as they preview each story.
Next, they listen to a good example of what an efficient reader sounds like. They listen a few times, and subvocalize as they listen, before practicing on their own a few times after. Over time, this really increases their confidence, and reading ability.
