Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in the Albany Park neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois. Albany Park is considered the most diverse of all Chicago neighborhoods. Our school is 94% low income and its graduation rate is 81%. The student body is diverse and includes 73% Hispanic, 13% black, 7% Asian and 5% white.
For the first time, our staff and students will have 2 full time social workers and 4 academic counselors to meet the emotional and social needs of the diverse student body.
Our school offers specialty programs that include ROTC, Culinary Arts, Health Sciences, Gaming, Early Childhood Development and Cisco Networking. The school aims to engage the student body with a well rounded curriculum to prepare them for post secondary education or trade school.
My Project
School mental health workers teach coping skills, social skills and behavioral modification techniques to students. We also support students with wrap around services, both inside and outside of school.
Many times, environmental stress will affect a student's ability to focus, stay calm or organized, and make meaningful connections with peers.
With products to promote good hygiene, and snacks to fill hungry stomachs, we can help our students feel good about themselves and hopefully improve their overall functioning during the school day. These items will be used by both the school social workers (2) and school counselors (4) to help us meet the needs of our wonderful students.
