Our school is an urban charter school. Though more than half our students are economically disadvantaged, we still have an incredibly diverse group of children and families from many walks of life.
Our school tries to prepare everyone, no matter their background, for life with programs of Leader in Me and Spanish language.
This means independent kids learning to further advocate for themselves and their education and values. Beyond that, they're a great bunch of kids from all sorts of neighborhoods and cultures around our city.
My Project
Like many a second grade classrooms, we are diverse learners with skills all over the place in different areas. Many of our students are continuing to build their basic reading and decoding skills and we don't have enough of the right books to help with this.
Easy reader books with decodable and sight words are a great way for beginning readers to gain confidence and skill.
In all our talk of "good fit" books, we want our beginning readers to have books at the right level, books they can read, be entertained by, and master.
These books that focus on sight words and simple phonetic words will be used for personal reading as well as skill-building exercises to help my students on this phase of their reading.
When my students have increased their skills, our class library will still have entertaining and informative books to enjoy.
