Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Good citizens don't "just happen", they must be "built" on solid foundations. I teach Civics to 11th and 12th grade students, and their understanding of the U.S. Constitution is essential to making their civil rights and responsibilities clear. From the President of the United States, to a local judge, or an Army private; every level of service requires its members swear to protect and defend the U.S. Constitution. It must be the central focus of a course in American government.
While the regular text book issued to our students includes a complete U.S. Constitution, students are not permitted to write notes and reflections, underline unfamiliar words, or highlight difficult sections of the writing because the text books are expensive and must be used for a number of years by many students.
Understanding the language and concepts presented in the U.S. Constitution can present a daunting challenge to young people, but when they are given the proper tools and coaching, they get very excited about understanding our laws. Sadly, the school budget for consumable copies is very limited, especially in this economy.
Public school students are told throughout their school experience, "DON'T WRITE IN THE BOOK!" Then, when they go off to college and purchase their own text books, they are told the exact opposite, and are soon trained to annotate, highlight, and underline. I propose to begin this scholarly practice as a preparatory habit by issuing every student a pocket-sized U.S. Constitution. They will be required to carry their very own, tiny text at all times during our term and make notations as required. Assignments that call for them to produce their pocket Constitutions in class, on field trips, during review sessions, and at home with their parents, will establish the Constitution's important place at the heart of a free society and instill the habits of reference and reflection.
Encouraging young people to embrace their heritage of liberty and self-governance is a great opportunity. I am thankful for it every day. You can help me in this most important "building project", the nurturing of American citizens, by funding the purchase of these books.
