Our school sits in the middle of a small community that once was an industrial town but has fallen on extreme hard times. Our school is made up of students from diverse backgrounds with varied experiences. There are 21 children in my classroom and our building consists of grades 1-2. Over 85% of the students come from considerable poverty. This year 100% of the students in our district receive free lunches. They are loving, hard working, and always appreciate the simple things in life. The teachers in my building strive to provide comfortable, loving, educational work areas for every student. We say that our classroom doors aren't just doors that open up into a room, but doors that open to a home full of learning. Our classrooms are our homes.

My Project
Teaching problem solving is invaluable to children’s learning, confidence and independence. That is why we need some problem solving activities. When the children use the Building Brick Challenge Kit the children will develop skills in physical science and engineering. The Following Directions Building Set helps the children follow simple directions to build and it is accompanied with illustrated instructions. The Geostix are a captivating way to introduce children to early geometry concepts! Using the Geostix gives the children lots of practice with color and size recognition, creative thinking, fine motor skills and more. The Map My Town Learning Center allows children to follow rebus-style activity cards to place blocks in the correct location, learning mapping skills and positional words. Lastly, the Applying STEM Activity Cards give projects that kids complete using everyday materials. For each project, students are guided through the design process step-by-step—as they plan their design and create their model, make improvements and reflect on what they’ve learned. Along the way, kids develop critical STEM skills…and grow more confident in problem solving!
