My students need these books to help make cross curricular connections. This will help my students make stronger connections and think more critically about the problem or challenge that is presented to them.
Our school serves students in grades K-5 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers and a safe learning environment. Our community has changed over the years from stay at home moms to both mom and dad working. My role as a STEAM teacher is crucial to beginning the path of a positive experience towards school.
I want to start my STEAM lessons with good, quality read aloud books!
This will help my students start the lesson with some knowledge and get them excited about what we are learning! The children will be visiting my classroom once a week for 45 minutes and I want the time that they will have with me to be exciting and engaging!
For STEAM instruction, I will begin many lessons by reading a children's book. For example we might read Iggy Peck Architect. This book tells the tale of a little boy who loves building so much that he builds structures out of dirty diapers. Then his second-grade teacher squashes his innovation and creativity. In the end, a serious calamity allows Iggy to use his skills to save his class.
We will then use that book to create our design challenge which would be to use items to make up your own fantasy structure!
It will be exciting to see what the students come up with! Fantasy structures are a fun way to encourage your engineer to invent, build, and persist in while testing their building blueprint.
Structuring STEAM challenges like this motivates, inspires, fosters creativity, encourages teamwork, but best of all...provides a childhood connection that makes sense.
We would LOVE to begin the year with a variety of books to connect to our challenges. Your donations will make us one of the happiest STEAM classrooms yet! Thank you in advance!
