I am a third grade teacher in the South Bronx. This year I wanted to start the year off with a new behavior incentive program. In any class there are those that will listen to instruction and those who act out. Most of the class will fall into the cooperative area and will not give any problem all year. Then there is the usual 10% that will struggle all year long. This year I would like to have a program in place where children can collect tickets for good behavior and turn those tickets in once or twice a month for prizes. With our school being located in an impoverished area of the South Bronx we are faced daily with so many children that are homeless and living in shelters, parents struggling with drug and alcohol abuse, single parent homes (absent fathers), physical abuse, foster care and children living with elderly grandparents. These are just a few issues that will cause a child to come to school and act out. To discourage this type of behavior there should be rewards like verbal praise along with tangible rewards like stickers, balls and pencils. The reward doesn't have to be expensive , just a simple pencil puts a smile on a child's face and gives them a sense that they earned a reward for their good behavior. Starting the school year with a reward program in place will help eliminate the acting out that can occur all year long. I thank any donor in advance for your caring heart.
