We are living in the greatest city of the world, and yet many of my students have never been to Central Park, Statue of Liberty, and many other NYC attractions that make us famous. School has always been a great place to be exposed to the great philosophers and concepts of history. It has also been a great place to be exposed to ideas and concepts just outside of our children's immediate worlds. My students are often only exposed to only what their neighborhoods have to offer. Few have ever been exposed to golf. Many of them believe it is a sport only rich or white people play. As the the new Athletic Director in my building, I'm trying to figure out a way of building up school spirit. In case you are not familiar with Math & Science Magnet High school, we are one of four schools in our building. The building, formerly known as Andrew Jackson, is now known as Campus Magnet. All four schools are separate in the building except for the athletic teams and the special education department. The funding for the athletic teams is scarce. I am requesting a set of golf clubs to start an after-school club and eventually a golf team. I just want my students to be exposed, not only to the great minds of history, but to more of the options the world has to offer. Thank you.
