My students are an incredible community of diverse learners. Each one brings unique perspectives and experiences which they enjoy sharing with one another in the form of debates and class discussions. They represent a wide range of learning styles. While some enjoy working independently others thrive on collaboration and interacting with one another.
Our school is in a low-income rural community where over 40% of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch.
A number of my students live and work on family farms where they learn the value of hard work. Often they bring this same work ethic with them into the classroom.
The community here pulls together and supports one another; hence, there is a strong sense of community among my students. Earlier this year my students had the opportunity to participate in a school-wide day of service. Students went out into the community to give back. They recognized a need and did something to help out, expecting nothing in return.
My Project
The standard student desk is not always the best seat for everyone. Students do best when they are comfortable in their learning environment. My goal is to create a welcoming classroom that students look forward to coming to. I want to be able to offer my students a variety of seating options to fit their unique needs.
Every student deserves a seat that allows them to focus on learning.
Typically students are expected to sit for long periods of time throughout the school day in standard student desks. These desks are often uncomfortable and don't allow students to move about freely. No one can do their best work when they're uncomfortable and students are no exception.
My more energetic students would really benefit from the wobble-stool. It would allow them to appropriately release some of their restless energy and help them to focus better.
My students often work together on projects and they need a larger space than a desktop to spread out their work, the table and chairs would be a great addition to our room and allow students the extra space and collaborative seating.
Last, but not least, the bean bag chair and ottoman would be perfect for creating a quiet reading nook for students.
Students benefit from having options. My plan is to provide those options and make learning more comfortable for the students.
