Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our classrooms we are learning about animals and habitats from all over the world. Many of our students come from low income households and do not have cars. Some have not yet experienced a simple rite of passage for most children-a trip to the local zoo!
I teach in an urban and diverse school in Massachusetts.
We a predominately a low income school, with more than 80% of our students receiving free/reduced lunch. Our school also has a very high population of non English speakers. Our class sizes are large and vary from 23 to 26 students per class in the first grade alone. The teachers and administration always work hard to make our school a safe and welcoming environment for all students. Going on a field trip is challenging, because of the economic status of many of our families. Another challenge is that our school has a very large population of students, but a rather small PTO, therefore they are not able to contribute to field trips.
My Project
We will use all monies collected to travel to and from the Stone Zoo as well as admission for our teachers and chaperones. We will be using this trip as a culminating project for our Model Curriculum Unit titled: Animals and Habitats. The children will use information gathered on our trip plus facts obtained from nonfiction text to write a research paper on an animal and habitat of their choosing. We hope that by going to the zoo the children will be able to see some of the ways that the zookeepers were able to replicate the animals' natural habitat. In addition to the research paper the children will create a diorama of their selected habitat.
Field trips are both fun and motivational for reluctant learners.
We will use this trip as a way to motivate our students to persevere while researching their animal/habitat of choice. This trip will help provide a real world and concrete background to our students. We hope this trip will be both beneficial and a memorable experience for our students. We are excited to get our students out of the confines of our school and into another environment that they can learn from by experience.
