My Students

My students are a bunch of creative minds. They enjoy doing projects that use multiple types of media from electronics, writing, drawing, etc. Their best work is done when they are able to move around the classroom and work in a comfortable manner.

SMGS is a PreK-6 school in a district a half hour west of Topeka, KS.

Our district is unique in its design by having two separate, individual high schools and two grade schools that serve four towns and two different counties.

My Project

Each year my students read the books "Freedom Walkers" and "The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963." Both of these books deal with the issues of the American Civil Rights Movement in both a nonfiction and fictional manner. Many of my students do not know too much about the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement or about how others were treated. We try to read these books before we go to Kansas State University and watch their student play series that is usually about the Civil Rights Movement.

It is becoming more difficult to read "The Watsons Go to Birmingham" since the books we use are more tape than book.

We currently borrow a novel set from the 6th grade in a different building in our district. Since we both read these books, they have started to fall apart and have been taped together a few different times.

We often want to read the story around the same time and end up sharing our resources. Having our own copies would allow us the flexibility to read the story when it fits better into our schedule.
