Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As the school librarian, I have the privilege to work in a supportive, hardworking community and teach all students from kindergarten through eighth grade each week. During our recent drive-by car parade throughout the school neighborhood, it was heartwarming to see so many students and their families waving and holding signs that said “thank you” and “we miss our teachers.” This show of support and love truly represents our school community. Despite the many hardships families are facing due to COVID-19, families are making sure their children are keeping up with their schoolwork and daily online classes.
My students are determined and eager to learn.
Our school has been closed since March 17. With the shift to online instruction, our school has made sure that families have the technology required to keep learning. A majority of our students now have access to technology, some using devices on loan from our school, and the internet. Teachers, students, and parents are working hard to continue learning. Now more than ever, it is my goal to continue to develop my students’ love of reading and learning.
My Project
Since the closure of school and start of remote learning, I have been creating lessons and instructional screencasts, curating and sharing resources to support teaching and learning, connecting with classrooms during daily Google Meet classes, responding to the daily influx of emails from parents and students, and maintaining my library our school websites. Unfortunately, my slow, old laptop is limiting my ability to connect and is hindering my productivity. My computer freezes, crashes, or loses internet connection during online meetings multiple times a day. A simple task on the computer turns into a waiting game as I wait for my computer to respond or restart. Since my computer is unreliable for online Google Meet classes with students and staff meetings, I am currently borrowing a family member’s computer.
Teaching my students remotely is especially challenging with unreliable technology.
Even in the best situations, remote learning is a challenge for everyone involved. Without a reliable computer, remote learning is even more arduous. I am requesting a new MacBook Air laptop. This new laptop will give me the ability to spend more time creating lessons, curating resources, and connecting with students instead of spending time troubleshooting and working through delays. This project will allow me to continue to create lessons and literacy-focused resources that will keep students engaged in reading and learning during this difficult time. Thank you for your support!
