My students need a visual of what traveling outside of the county looks like, these flags will be displayed around my classroom to open discussion about travel.
What brings us together? Growing up, if wanted to talk to someone we went to their house, met up at the skating ring, and picked up the phone and called. Well our community is very rural, and we do not have a skating ring , and to get to someones house would take quiet a long walk. But in reality our students live in a text message society. We want to change that! Let them see the world and feel comfortable to ask questions.
My Project
In the classroom, I often talk about my travels with my students as I teach the social studies content. They seem so fascinated about the stories, and adding a splash of color to the classroom, with the flags from different states and countries I have visited would be a great conversation starter. Many of our students don't travel very far outside of our area. This would be a great way to open up those topics of conversation. For example, when we talk about NC in our Civics and Economics class, we discuss the state flag. We will now be able to reference other state flags and compare.
