My Students

I teach in a wonderful school that's located in a small, rural area. Our school is full of caring, inquisitive and amazing students. They brighten my day and make coming to work something that I love doing daily. I teach third grade and I cannot imagine a more perfect age group to work with. My students are at the age at which they are gaining independence, but are still eager to learn and soak up the world around them. I learn just as much from them as they do from me.

Benjamin Franklin once said, "Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn." That is my goal for my kiddos each school year.

I want each of them to be totally engrossed and involved in the learning process so that their lives will be forever changed because of what they have learned.

My Project

Many of my students this year are lovers of fantasy or realistic fiction novels. Non-fiction (to many of my students) is not interesting. But I believe that they just need to find the perfect book, written in a way that grabs their attention. There are so many cool new non-fiction series out there specifically written for kids, and I want to be able to put some of these books into my kids' hands.

Non-fiction reading is a huge part of our everyday life.

Adults read online news sites, check e-mails, research websites to read reviews, etc. As a kid, I tended to love reading fiction as my personal preference. So I relate to my students who get engrossed in an imaginary story, or caught up in a good mystery. However, I want my kids to learn to be lovers of non-fiction as well. It will forever be a part of their lives as they grow older. Learning to read nonfiction is essential.

This project proposal would provide my students with amazing resources to soak up some really great nonfiction such as "Who Would Win," "Weird But True," and "World of Weird Animals." Please help me stock up my class library with interesting informational reads for my 3rd graders!
