Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are all amazing workers, and do best when they have the right tools and motivation to reach their goals. Our school is within a large city district with a high needs population. The students benefit from a flexible, but firm and demanding environment where they are held to high, attainable expectations. Students benefit from warm, loving teachers who demand respect for themselves, their peers, and the work they complete.

This is a Title I school and the school district as well as this specific elementary school are going through many changes to increase learning and better student outcomes.

Our hope is to provide students with enough support and strategies to help them achieve and soar past their grade level goals. We want to increase learning and change students' attitudes toward learning to eventually have them crave learning all the time!

My Project

These materials will provide an opportunity for my students to fully experience the Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory learning method. These supplies are organizational and important for students with learning disabilities to utilize memorization and grammar rules to assist in their reading fluency.

Students will benefit greatly from this program because of its focus on incorporating all of the senses to insure students learn what they need to and will be able to recall it later on in their educational journey.

My students will use the green supplies, such as green folders and crayons to learn spelling and pronunciation rules, and the red supplies, such as red folders, crayons, and paper to learn "red words," or sight words. Students will also use other supplies such as pencils, highlighters, and other manipulatives to learn rules to spelling words in certain ways. I have seen this program in action, and it makes an enormous difference in fluency!
