You are what you eat! Healthy eating is the key to well-being. Unfortunately, many children do not make healthy food choices. My school is implementing outdoor classroom gardens in order to provide education on healthy eating through hands-on learning.
Our school is located in Elk Grove, CA.
One-third of the diverse student population are on a free or reduced price lunch program. Also, in the immediate vicinity of our school, there exists an abundance of fast food establishments. As a result, many of the students are distanced from the source of the foods that they eat and often miss the experience of growing and tasting fresh fruits and vegetables.
My Project
While the garden is a real-world learning lab for our students, the green gardening books will illustrate how the outdoor classroom garden can lead to nutritious and tasty food choices. Plus, students will hone their language arts skills by reading literature about plant life and investigate topics related to gardening and nutrition.
Since our school is located in a typical suburban setting of housing subdivisions, sidewalks, and strip malls, our students are often far removed from the source of the food products that they eat.
A school garden is a way to connect our students with nature. These books will aid that effort by introducing a variety of fun and informative green gardening concepts. Individual donors, Disney, and other foundations - please consider supporting us!
