Going Graphic: Graphic Novels for Greater Comprehension

My students need 19 graphic novels, including 'Oliver Twist;' 'Nancy Drew;' and 'Hardy Boys,' to help struggling readers with comprehension.

My Students

What was the first book that you loved? For many of my students, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid, a graphic novel, was that book. Wimpy has introduced them to a love of reading, and often the books they love are graphic. Please help us expand our graphic novel collection!

I am the school librarian at a public elementary school in the poverty belt.

My kids are excited about reading, but because they come from low-literacy backgrounds or because they speak English as a second language or because they just have yet to find the right book, struggle with reading comprehension. However, they LOVE graphic novels, which scaffold their reading comprehension. The top fifteen checked out books in my collection are all graphic novels. If you were to support this project, I guarantee that my students will read your books to pieces.

My Project

By purchasing graphic novels, you will help my school library expand its most popular collection, the graphic novel section. This section is so popular and well-loved that I literally have kids arguing over who gets to check out what book, and how often does that happen? Graphic novels are important to have in our collection because they play a critical role in improving reading comprehension through developing vocabulary. In his best-selling Read Aloud Handbook, author Jim Trelease states that the average comic book has more rare vocabulary words than adult books, children's books, prime time television, and the average adult to child conversation. Providing our students with these materials will enhance their vocabulary and reading fluency, and enable them to understand the plot, setting and sequence of events, and make inferences. Many will develop an authentic love of reading.

By providing graphic novels for our library, you can have a direct impact in scaffolding the reading comprehension of struggling readers.

You can provide books that my students fight to read. You can make a difference in improving the literacy rate. My students and I sincerely appreciate your support.
