Going Graphic!: Getting New Texts Into Kids' Hands
My students need new graphic novels. These new books will allow access for all readers while requiring inferencing. Toon Graphic, and Graphix are award-winning publishers with texts that will appeal to all ages.
Our focus this year at Beverly Park is to get more books in the hands of kids! We've had various projects to inspire readers from K-6th grade, including a school-wide reading competition and a "lending library" in our entryway. Whenever new books are displayed in our library, in the classroom, or even in the entryway, students swarm the area, excited to find the perfect book. They'll trade books in the hallways, classrooms, and outside on the playground, carting them around in backpacks, lunch boxes, or carrying them in their hands.
Students at my Elementary LOVE getting new books and, even more, love talking about their newest read!
Some of the most popular titles right now are any kind of graphic novels. As a school-based specialist, I'll have kids in every classroom seek me out to tell me what they're reading. Students in the lower elementary are so proud when they've read their first graphic novel, as finally they're reading what they see the older kids read.
My Project
At my school, 50% of our students are language learners, about 75% qualify for free-and-reduced lunch, and the majority are performing below grade level in reading. These are students who are excited to learn more and care about doing their best, but they don't always have access to the materials that would support them. Also, with a lack of reading materials at home, the majority of students get texts to read from school and do the majority of reading at school.
We need to excite kids about reading, and the easiest way is to give them access to new texts they would love to read!
I want to start an after-school Reading Club focusing on graphic novels, open to kindergarten through sixth grade students. I want to provide a variety of texts to expand what our students know about texts published in this medium, as well as a regular place and time to develop and share their passion. Getting these text is essential to the success of this Reading Club!
