Our classroom is a "forward thinking" learning area. I incorporate traditional learning values with exciting educational opportunities. I have tried to add as much STEAM learning to our classroom as possible, along with giving the students seating options. I would like to now focus on creating a more inviting, relaxing and visually pleasing area of my room.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds and encompass a wide range of learning styles and talents.
Our school embraces this and tries to vary our lessons, activities and classrooms to accommodate.
Just as adults benefit from inviting spaces to work in, so do our children. In addition, many of our students benefit from adding in additional responsibilities such as learning to care for pets. They need new and exciting things in their classroom to encourage the love of school and learning. I believe this new project will make our classroom even more inviting, exciting and relaxing.
My Project
My classroom has evolved over the past years to include flexible seating, maker space supplies, STEAM activities and more. My students also spend a great deal of time in the "Reader's Workshop" as they work in book clubs, journal their character journeys and use their growing reading skills to learn.
I want to create a reading area in the room which is visually pleasing and relaxing.
I also want to provide students with something they can take ownership in. Therefore, "Going Fishing" revolves around adding an acrylic (much stronger and safer than glass) BiOrb aquarium with necessary components. Fish will be purchased separately. The components include a heater, cleaning supplies, food, decor and much more. Students will assist in setup, cleaning and maintenance, feeding and more. Once complete with this BiOrb, students will have a much more exciting reading area.
The resources will not only add to the aesthetic side of the room, but to learning as well. Students will research the fish and aquatic animals inside the aquarium. They will be able to design projects about the fish, their life cycles, their adaptations, problem solve any issues, and really anything imaginable! In addition, I am excited to allow students to, under supervision, care for the aquarium and take ownership in it. I plan to focus the care on my special needs students who will greatly benefit from having something they are in charge of.
