We're building citizens! I teach journalism in grades 9-12 at a high-need urban public school that has gone without a student newspaper or yearbook for several years. As urban schools have faced tighter budgets and the increased pressure for high-stakes testing, journalism has lost out. That's unfortunate, because studies show that students who take high school journalism classes and participate in student publications perform better on Advanced Placement college exams than do high school students who take AP classes, but no journalism. Journalism builds critical-thinking skills. The practice of asking questions and seeking out reliable information leads to the habits of citizenship. Inquisitive, empowered, informed students become adults who are equipped to participate fully in a democracy. We are building the journalism department at our school from the ground up. Cameras are among the tools that journalists use to tell their stories, whether in print or on the Internet. These easy-to-use digital cameras are a good starting point for building photojournalism skills. With your assistance, we can build a solid foundation for a journalism program that will prepare students for the world of college - and beyond.
