Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My second grade ESL students in Providence are a wonderful and diverse group who are eager to come to school every day and learn. We are learning how to read, write, and explain our thinking while problem-solving in math. My students are faced with challenges in and out of the classroom and my classroom is a safe, nurturing environment in which they can feel safe and loved. I do my best to provide what I can for the children.
My Project
Science and literacy learning in my classroom will take off with the materials I am requesting! In second grade, students learn about how butterflies pollinate plants and about animal life cycles. Although I have read them books about these topics, how can they possibly understand about important differences in the life cycles of different animals without having the "real deal' in front of them? By observing the fascinating metamorphosis of caterpillars into butterflies, my students will see a life cycle in action! They will be able to focus on the subtle changes that they observe happening over short periods of time. As they sketch and write about the changes they observe, they will be practicing the important scientific skills of data collection, observation, and reflection. The students will also have the benefit of a colorful poster showing the stages of the life cycle to refer to. Additionally, students will be reading on their own about this transformation in the books provided in the project. Their literacy and science scores will soar! Of course, most important of all, my students will be engaged and excited learners! Who can't resist a morphing butterfly?
