My students need one Exo Terra Congo Rainforest Habitat Kit for Reptiles, a Rainfall System, two Leopard Geckos, one Exo Terra Compact Top Canopy, one Exo Terra Repti-Glo 5.0 Compact Fluorescent Tropical Terrarium Lamp, Gecko food, Plastic Terrarium Plants, and other supplies.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My middle school students are diagnosed with Severe Emotional Disturbance and are in my class anywhere from 2-3 years. They come from high poverty neighborhoods and crave attention, structure, responsibility, education, and love.
These 12-15 year old boys are receiving services in a single classroom environment all day with behavior supports.
They have behaviors that limit them from being with students without disabilities in the regular education classroom. As their teacher, advocate, and mentor, I strive everyday to prepare them to get mainstreamed back into the regular education classroom.
My Project
For this project I am requesting two live geckos and a terrarium tank with plants and materials, including a misting system, thermometer, and tank heater, to help care for them. My students will be responsible for taking care of the geckos. They will need to clean their cage, feed them, and set up the terrarium based on the living requirements of the geckos. Having geckos in the classroom will also teach my students about nocturnal reptiles and will promote empathy - one of the main qualities my students lack.

I know by having these geckos, my students will want to come to school everyday and will succeed more in school being in an environment that they feel at home in.
