My Students

Swimming without goggles is difficult, but that's what many members of both our girls' and boys' swim teams have been doing. My students need swim goggles for practice and our swim meets.

Our high school is a selective enrollment math and science academy located in a rough neighborhood, but my students travel from all over the South Side in order to attend.

My students are 71% African American and 25% Hispanic, over 69% of whom are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. They are driven and motivated; they like to try new things and to challenge themselves in every way possible.

My Project

Trying new things includes learning to swim for many of our team members. The swim teams are comprised of excellent swimmers, novice swimmers and even some non-swimmers, but we're aiming to change that. Our goal is to teach the non-swimmers to swim, improve the skill level of the novice swimmers and to make the excellent swimmers even faster. Providing our swim teams with goggles will enable each and every member to swim better, faster and more efficiently.

These goggles will not only help our team to swim more effectively, but they will also unify our team visually.

I want our team to feel proud of their accomplishments when they walk into a swim meet and to exude school spirit as they compete and as they root for the rest of their team.
