Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have highly motivated and eager 9th-grade Biology students and highly motivated Advanced Placement Environmental Science students. My students love labs and learn tremendously from the hands-on experiences provided by labs.

Our school is a Medicine and Science Magnet school located in the inner city.

Our students are Title I eligible and are underrepresented minorities - especially in STEM fields. Our school offers a college-preparatory path for students, including four years of science and math. Ninth-grade students gain their first high school science experience in Biology, while 12th grade AP Environmental Science students are in their fourth year of science, exploring opportunities learning about advanced topics utilizing advanced equipment.

My Project

Prior to the current pandemic, my students voiced concerned about sharing laboratory safety goggles with multiple classes of students. It was time consuming to individually clean each pair of goggles before each laboratory activity--especially with classes running back-to-back. Clearly it was time to make a change in providing appropriately sterilized equipment for students. Current health concerns bring this issue to the forefront. Not only will this Ultraviolet Sterilization Cabinet serve students in my classes, but it can be used by all the Science teachers at my school, and used for years to come. Let us begin the next school year improving one important aspect of Science Laboratory health and safety.
