My Project

Teaching about genetics, heredity, and the process of natural selection is always more fun with projects and labs. Giving kids hands on opportunities to work through a problem, creates opportunities for them to learn more than just the content.

With the push to teach more integrated STEM topics, the Wobble Bot project is the perfect marriage between genetics and engineering.

After learning the basics about how traits are passed from parent to offspring, students are ready to see how real-world factors impact a species' ability to survive and reproduce. Students will design a "Wobble Bot" using Tinkercad software, focusing on specific traits. Once the design is complete, students will 3D print their bots and attach the motors and battery packs to the backs of their bots.

Each Wobble Bot will undergo four (4) tests. The mousepads will act as the "environments" in which the Wobble Bots are trying to survive. Students will collect data throughout each test to determine which bots will ultimately survive and reproduce. We will conclude this hands-on building and design challenge by determining which traits will be passed on and predicting what the next generation of Wobble Bots will look like. A project like this keeps students engaged and active in all aspects of learning!
