I am a visual arts teacher at a wonderful school that has become a kindergarten through second-grade school. My students are sweet, curious, and challenging at times, but there's no place I'd rather be than with my art classes.
My students love to "give back," and we do many community and global projects throughout the year to teach acceptance and kindness, such as blankets for animals at the Humane Society, The Memory Project, and participating in Peace Day.
I have taught art classes for 16 years; nine years at this school. I love every minute of it. Our staff is nurturing, highly qualified, and we care deeply about our students.
My Project
I teach art to kindergarten through second grade. This is the perfect age to teach and model respect, kindness and teamwork. These students are mostly very well behaved but every now and then, something comes up where a student is annoyed and ugly words or actions come out. Coping skills, strategies and using our words are things we discuss regularly. We have a wonderful counselor who teaches deep breathing techniques and mindfulness and even, after school yoga classes are offered.
I love to see my students helping each other in art.
They really enjoy being in charge and I have many "assistants" each period.
At the end of each class, we clean up and have Treasure Box time. They also receive Dojo points and Dragon Dollars. Many children visit the Treasure Box everyday and I try to keep it stocked. These toys and candy treats will be very appreciated and welcomed by my students.
Thank you for helping my students be the best they can be!
