In our classroom, we are explorers. Our mission is to explore different education subjects such as STEM activities. However, like many classrooms in NYC, we are a Title 1 school all the way in Coney Island. Not only are there a lack of opportunities but also a lack of easy access to materials, new education ideas, and even museums because of location. Together with my students, I have tried to create a community where change comes from them.
Rather than go top down, I put the power in their hands to help plan our field trips and to put input for what our classroom activities will look like and I hope to fulfill their extraordinary ideas.
I hope to show them that when they put in the time to plan I will listen to them. However, with that comes the need for support from the community and amazing people such as yourself. My students come from a myriad of backgrounds, stories, family life and so do all of you. Which is why I set up this page so they can feel that support from people all over the world and understand that they do have a chance to explore NYC.
My Project
Have you ever felt like you actually enjoyed learning? That feeling is something my students want to feel and are taking on themselves to find opportunities for learning outside and inside the classroom. As a group they found that going to the planetarium would be something that would spark a passion in science and also history in a lot of them. Our current learning is surrounding navigators and our place in the solar system so what better place to go than here.
The students came up with this idea on their own, and being able to both go to the planetarium and take their FIRST tour of college would be such a great experience for them.
They are such bright students and them showing they would like to learn is something I really want to support, and you can help me do that! If you chose this project you will not only be supporting the trip but also reinforcing the idea that the students can be in charge of their own learning.
