My students come from low economic and socioeconomic backgrounds, but that does not stop them from achieving great things academically and in sports and physical activities. My students do whatever it takes to get things done from staying after school and walking home, to skipping lunch to practice for tests or games. Many of my 14-18 year olds already work jobs, babysitting, mowing lawns, and more just to try and save enough to get a college education and graduate.
My students inspire me, daily.
All of my students eat free lunch because their economic status is so low across the board. They understand the value and importance of books and materials, but often they can't afford to buy these things on their own. Parents work multiple jobs and are hard to reach, but care greatly about the success of their children. These are my children and I do whatever I can to help them succeed as much as possible not just in my class and on the field, but in life.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will go to our boy's and girl's soccer teams. I am the Team Manager for the boy's team, and two other teachers have stepped up as head coaches. Our students have nothing: no jerseys, no water bottles, no balls, nothing to play or practice with. But they have heart and spirit; they are willing to spend out of pocket for jerseys to play with and match as a cohesive group on the field. So I am asking for practice balls and water bottles to give them an edge on the field and the right to feel like a real soccer team. Two of our team members fell last practice due to severe leg cramps, all because they are not drinking enough on and off the field. Therefore, I am requesting enough water bottles to support the boy's and the girl's teams and allow for everyone to stay hydrated and healthy while we fund other essential needs.
These kids are willing to do whatever it takes to play the sport they love.
I have also requested six armbands for our captains, three for the boys and three for the girls, all academically and physically achieving students who deserve the slight recognition and pride a simple armband can provide. My main goal as Team Manager is to keep the students as healthy as possible, and hopefully, I can be funded for these water bottles and practice balls to give them the edge to achieve and succeed.
