My students need an industrial shredder.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
All of my students need extra help and support to reach their goals, and I have the great opportunity to assist them.
I have the pleasure of serving students with severe multiple impairments.
Seven of nine of my students are non-ambulatory with limited or no verbal communication skills. At times it can be very difficult to find activities and materials for my students. When I find things which my students can utilize it can be very expensive and usually exceeds my classroom budget.
With an industrial shredder all of my students can participate in the Charles R. Drew Transition Center's "GO GREEN TEAM AT DREW" initiative. Every year students at Charles R. Drew Transition Center have the opportunity to participate in the Detroit Public Schools Go Green Challenge. My students will be collecting recyclables throughout the school to be weighed for the recycle bowl. Any paper collected will be shredded and distributed to classes for different projects, such as using shredded paper for one of several green houses on the campus for our students. An industrial shredder will be easier for my students to handle and the huge amount of paper collected. We are projected to collected over 2,000 pounds of paper this school year! This activity promotes cooperative learning, responsibility for ourselves, others and the earth.
Not only does an industrial shredder give my students a chance to participate in a school-wide activity but teaches fine motor skills, community service, social skills and job related skills to my students.
My vision for each student upon graduation is that they can use skills learned doing this yearly activity and transfer the skills to activities outside the school setting that allows them to become productive citizens despite their disabilities.
