My students need graphic novels in the library. Graphic novels make reading fun, especially for boys and low interest students.
My library is small and needs new books.
The library at Greenwood Middle School is small for the four grade levels it serves.
Money is limited in Wayne County and funds to support library books are often at the bottom.
Reading is what makes students comprehend, improving school and state test scores.
Books are needed that are interesting.
My students are grades 5-8.
We are a Title 1 school.
Our school is home to an Air force Base.
Funds for our school are mainly found through grants and donations.
Math test scores are higher than reading, so we need materials to fix this divide!
The library's section is larger in non-fiction texts, so we need some new and updated fiction works.
My Project
My school's students will check out books from the library and test on the readings weekly, if not daily.
Graphic novels are more likely to be checked out for boys than girls in my school, and boys are more likely to do worse on tests (data from school wide reports).
Students will use these graphic novels to become familiar with some classic literature, and some not so classic fun literature as well.
My project will make a difference in the lives of students who cannot afford to buy their own books.
Our county does not have the funds to constantly buy new books when the children want them.
These novels will be read over and over in the library and through the years as students come in and out of the library's doors.
Please help us make book lovers out of our boys!
